lifestyle of Sikkim people.

We have recently visited Sikkim and I think I have some knowledge what I learned about Sikkim in my 5 days visit.

Sikkim, a small bowl-like state, with as its capital Gangtok, has a hilly terrain and is accessible from the plains of Bengal. It is distinguished by its Himalayan flora and fauna and Buddhist monasteries. The state produces Temi tea, a unique variety of tea, and is a major tourist attraction for visitors because of its Himalayan location. there has been a rapid change in these states with the modernization of economy and expansion of education.

Sikkim is so beautiful that one can say it is God's own Country.

Normal life in Sikkim is so simple. They live in villages on mountain slopes, jungles are behind their houses. People follow early to bed and early to rise kind of thing. There is no night life. People are very hardworking, other type of works like canteens etc. whereas men do mostly hard works like construction, also they are house men doing odd jobs, carrying goods from markets to their homes situated on upside of mountain etc.

Roads are in very good condition, two laned and have a very fast traffic. Vehicles are mostly for daily commuters like Bolero and Marshals with modified middle seats. They carry 10–12 passengers on a very nominal fare min 30rs to max 100rs. I didn't see bikes there. Only some pulsars, one or two Avengers and some KTM. You can count on fingers after a full day tour.

Self-driving a car 4-wheeler in any protected area of Sikkim is usually not allowed for tourists. With Protected Area Permit one can get to such areas through registered tour operators of Sikkim who offer tour packages in their own vehicles like Sumo, Scorpio, Bolero.

I have been visited Majitar, Gangtok, Hanuman Tok, Vegetable market & several local markets. People are friendly there. We have hire Nepali drivers for see the Sikkim location & they are very helpful.

One thing what I will always appreciate that they never break the lanes on roads. You can drive in your lane even at 80 kmph.

 A ) MG Market Gangtok

This place is a must visit because without it a visit to Gangtok is incomplete. 'Marg' in Hindi means 'Road'. So, MG Marg means MG Road ... all Indians will know that always an important road (if not the most important road) in any city or township in India would be named as Mahatma Gandhi Road or MG Road. Gangtok is no exception and this is the town center of the hill town

The road and the area around it have transformed over the years. It is now more like a long stretch of open mall or boulevard square where locals and tourists take leisure stroll or just sit and relax on one of the many benches laid along the middle and both sides of the road to soak in the ambience.

A part of the Eastern Himalaya, Sikkim is notable for its biodiversity, including alpine and subtropical climates, as well as being a host to Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India and third highest on Earth. Sikkim's capital and largest city is Gangtok.

How did it all start?

In 2010, the government formulated and launched the Sikkim Organic Mission with clear goals which helped them achieve the all-organic status in January 2016. The initiative covered 190,000 acres of farmland and benefitted 66,000 farmer families to switch to organic farming.

Sikkim has recently become very famous around the world for becoming the first state of India and in the world to be fully organic. It won the UN Food and Agro-ecological Organization’s Future Policy Award 2018. It competed with 51 nominated policies from 25 different countries for the best policy promoting agro-ecological and sustainable food systems.

Organic Farming: Sikkim Case Study

8 Sikkim was awarded UN Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) Future Policy Gold Award (Gold Prize) for its achievement in becoming the world’s first totally organic agriculture state.

Sikkim's organic mission started in 2003, when its Chief Minister Pawan Chamling declared his intent to make Sikkim India's first organic state. Chamling has been reelected five times, so he was able to oversee the entire process. First, the state officially banned the sale of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, forcing its farmers to go organic. And it ran several events like a two-day workshop in March 2010 where organic experts and scientists advised farmers on making the transition. But Sikkim's organic switch is not just good for public health; it's also good for the economy as organic produce has higher profit margins for farmers,

Sikkim tea is a variety of tea grown in the state of Sikkim, India. Though is not as widespread in use as the neighboring Darjeeling tea, it has recently gained more recognition from the increasing demand for organic products. In 1951, following the Chinese invasion of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s foremost spiritual and political leader agreed to a peaceful occupation. After an uneasy decade came the revolt in 1959. Fearing for his life, he fled to India where he established an administration-in-exile. Across India, settlements came up for the thousands of Tibetans who followed him into exile and continue to do so.

Sikkim shares more than geographical proximity with Tibet. The state religion is Tibetan Buddhism. The then king of Sikkim, the Choegyal, Palden Dhondup Namgyal, himself practiced Tibetan Buddhism. He was also a bhutia, a term that indicates Tibetan ancestry. He was keen to help the Tibetan exiles. Tea was already a thriving industry in neighboring Darjeeling, and it must have seemed like a good idea to borrow that as a source of livelihood. In 1969, Sikkim’s first tea garden came up, in Ravangla, planted with chinary and clonal saplings obtained from Darjeeling.

The state of Sikkim nestles amidst the picturesque and scenic Himalayas in North East India. From the mystic tea gardens of this region emerge the organic two tender leaves and a bud, flourishing at an altitude of 1000-2000 metres above sea level. The tea leaves are hand-plucked with love and care to bring to you a delectable brew which is light, flowery, golden yellow and of delicate flavour. The cultivation of tea in Sikkim started with the establishment of its first tea garden in 1969 — the Temi Tea Estate.

Another boutique garden was added to the fold of Sikkim Tea when the Bermiok tea garden was established in the year 2002. The state of Sikkim was declared fully organic in January 2016, and the teas produced at the Temi Tea Estate were certified as 100% Organic Tea in the year 2008. The first flush of Sikkim Tea, harvested during springtime, has a unique taste and aroma.

The refined golden liquor has a light floral finish and a hint of sweet lingering taste. Mellow and smooth, the second flush of Sikkim Tea is a toasty brew, with a heady, strong yet smooth brew. The third flush or Monsoon Flush of Sikkim Tea creates a full-bodied cup with mellow taste.

The final flush or Autumn Flush of Sikkim Tea has a well-rounded taste and the light hint of warm spices. This amber liquor is the perfect end to the seasons of tea. Besides the above varieties of black teas, Sikkim also produces the delicate white tea, which is manufactured from the buds and unfurled new leaves; green tea, which is known for its flowery liquor; and Oolong tea, which is fruity, fragrant and earthy.
